Mount Marapi Volcano Eruption Claims Lives of Hikers, Leaves Dozens Missing

Eleven hikers have tragically lost their lives near the crater of Indonesia's Mount Marapi volcano following a weekend eruption, with twelve others still missing. The search operation was halted on Monday due to another eruption. Most of the 75 hikers in the area during the initial eruption were successfully evacuated, but the aftermath left the sky darkened and nearby villages covered in ash.
Marapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes and a popular destination for hikers, unleashed a 3km ash cloud into the air. This incident occurred despite the reopening of some trails just last June after ash eruptions from January to February. Marapi's deadliest eruption was in 1979, claiming the lives of 60 people.
Rescue efforts have faced challenges, with three survivors found near the crater exhibiting signs of weakness and burns before the search was temporarily suspended. The identities of the hikers have not been disclosed. Video footage captured the enormity of the ash cloud, affecting roads and vehicles in its path.
While 49 climbers were safely evacuated, many sustained burns. The injured were transported down the mountain's difficult terrain to awaiting ambulances. The search and rescue team faced additional obstacles due to the hazardous conditions, prompting a pause in operations during the ongoing eruptions.
One survivor, Zhafirah Zahrim Febrina, shared a distressing video message seeking help from her mother. The 19-year-old student, nicknamed Ife, was visibly shocked and injured, emphasizing the traumatic experience. Her mother highlighted the psychological impact, noting that Ife witnessed her burns and endured the pain throughout the night.
The volatile nature of Marapi, situated on Sumatra, raises concerns about the ongoing search efforts. The eruption's impact on hikers, coupled with the challenges faced by rescue teams, underscores the unpredictable dangers of volcanic activity in this region.
