Mike Lynch "British Bill Gates" Missing After Yacht Sinks in Sicily

Mike Lynch

In a shocking turn of events, British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been reported missing after his superyacht, the Bayesian, capsized and sank off the coast of Sicily.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was confirmed to have been rescued, but the fate of the 59-year-old businessman remains uncertain.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. local time on Saturday, as the 56-meter-long sailboat was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village near Palermo. Authorities say the vessel was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm, leading to its sudden sinking.

Lynch, the founder of enterprise software firm Autonomy, had been the target of a protracted legal battle with Hewlett Packard in recent years. The U.S. tech giant had accused him of inflating Autonomy's value in an $11 billion sale, leading to an $8.8 billion write-down on the company's value.

In June of this year, Lynch was acquitted of fraud charges following a three-month trial in the U.S. However, the ongoing legal saga appears to have taken a tragic turn with his reported disappearance in the waters off Sicily.

The search and rescue operation is ongoing, with local officials confirming that at least one person has died and six others remain missing, while 15 individuals, including a 1-year-old baby, were successfully rescued.

This developing story highlights the unpredictable nature of the seas and the risks faced by even the most wealthy and influential individuals. As the search continues, the tech community and beyond anxiously await news of Lynch's safe return.
